Kinkade - Ahhahhhaaaahaa

I love the idea of this show in SF. The title is: "Kinkade Cannibalized! - An Exhibition of Augmented Thomas Kinkade Paintings." I do not consider Kinkade an artist so this is a sweet revenge for me. Anyway read the article and look at some of the flicker pics. Some are hilarious. My favorite is the toilet paper one.

  1. Thanks for posting this Zsuzsanna! I also found this exhibit very amusing, especially the piece with the street opening up to reveal Hell beneath Kinkade's idyllic neighborhood...a very interesting contrast!

  2. While we may not like Kinkade's work, and we can question whether he is an artist. To me the question is, what would we sacrifice to achieve that level of success? Where is the boundry beyond which we will not go? If a consumer of art said "I will give you $10,000 if you will change this area of your painting from blue to red, would you do it?

  3. Mike in a heart beat, and then I'd buy the best $10,000 turntable there is.. believe it or not they exist, that may seem sad but it would improve my time in the studio ten fold. the general consensus is Kinkad is not an artist just a maker of expensive decorations for walls in the homes of thousands
...I believe that art is the representation or reflection of a culture at that given moment.... I don't want to be to cynical but then again maybe he is? guess time will tell

  4. Kirk,
You want one of those laser turntables or a VPI
HR-X. I remember "back in the day" when my brother-in-law spent about a grand on a Thorens turntable and we all thought he had lost his mind.

  5. Michael,
I do not have a problem with the Kinkeda that paints by numbers and gets millions for it, however I do have a problem with the Kinkade that does not even pick up his brush but mass produces his fairyland images in China. I bet some of his customers do not even know that what they bought didn't even come close to Kinkeda's body let alone brushes. To me an artist evolves takes risk, he has not done that so in my eyes his is not an artists. Nonetheless some people like the cozy feeling his paintings give to them, so that is OK, but for God's sake at least put a few highlights on them so they can say that Kinkade touched it and made a two centimeter stroke on it.

  6. Zsuzsanna,
I am as judgemental, if not moe so, than most people. You know how much I despise the work of Damien Hirst. I would, however, put disected pigs in formaldehyde all day long for a million dollars each. If I didn't have to touch any of it so much the better. Dali sold blank canvases with his signature on it. People put whatever they wanted on the canvas and sold them as the work of Dali. Who is the idiot, Dali or the final customer? Who is the most dishonest Dali or the person that bought a blank canvas with the signature to make their own "original Dali"? Those are the interesting questions to me.

  7. I like the "hatchet job" piece done on the meat cleaver. Nice metaphor.
